PS5: new free update adds long-requested feature

A new system update is being deployed on all PlayStation 5s. Free and already accessible to many players since November 20, it significantly improves the console’s customization options, a point that has long been criticized since its launch.

It is mainly the application Welcome Hub who benefits from this refreshment. It now hosts a new activity widgetdisplaying the latest games launched, total time spent, number of sessions, and overall progress. A much-awaited little extra, especially for players who like to keep an eye on their backlog or plan their 100% trophies. As the official description states: “See your recent gaming activity and go directly to the games you recently played”.

What the PS5 November update really brings

Another visual novelty: the arrival of seasonal dynamic wallpapers. From now on, the console background will change with the seasons. Right now, an autumn decor with falling leaves is displayed by default. Sony promises a gradual change as winter approaches. It is still possible to choose a personalized background from those offered, but this contextual animation adds a more immersive touch to the interface.

On the activation side, everything is done from the settings. If the new widget does not appear automatically, simply activate “Recently Played Titles” in the Welcome Hub options. A simple manipulation for a functionality that could become addictive among the most dedicated players.

A taste of the future PS6?

This return to personalization marks a discreet but revealing turning point in Sony’s software strategy. After a PS5 launched with a refined but limited design, players have been asking for more flexibility in the interface for months. This update seems to finally answer this request.

By integrating statistical tracking, evolving aesthetics and dynamic shortcuts, the PS5 moves closer to a more lively and user-centered interface. A glimpse, perhaps, of what Sony is preparing for the PlayStation 6, expected within a few years. In the meantime, these improvements show that even without a total overhaul, the PS5 still has something to surprise.
