Oda writes down the secret of “One Piece” – and sinks it into the sea

The manga series »One Piece« reached a new milestone today and celebrated it with a special video that deals with the biggest secret of the franchise. We summarize below.

600 million copies

With the release of volume 114 on March 4, 2026, Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga series officially has more than 600 million copies in circulation. Of this, over 450 million are in Japan and 150 million in the rest of the world.

Most recently, volume 103 broke the 510 million copy mark in August 2022. This means that total circulation increased by an impressive 90 million copies in just over three and a half years.

To celebrate, a video has been released that focuses on one of the series’ biggest mysteries: the true meaning of “One Piece.” In the clip, Oda writes his vision on a piece of paper, which he then tears up.

While the upper part contains the text “What is ‘ONE PIECE’ and Monkey D. Luffy?” and was printed in full size as a newspaper advertisement in the morning editions of the Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun on March 4, 2026, Oda sealed the actually interesting lower part, which contains the answer to the question, in a treasure chest and sank it to the bottom of the sea.

It will only be recovered there and presented to the public after the manga has been completed. However, it will probably be some time before that happens, even if “One Piece” is now in its final saga.
