Oda wants to inspire a new generation with “One Piece” remake

Current statements from WIT Studio President George Wada provide insight into the background of the “One Piece” remake – and show the central role Eiichiro Oda plays in it. We summarize all the details.

Oda pushes ahead with remake

Recently, George Wada, President of WIT Studio, spoke about various topics in an interview with the YouTube channel “Ai SHOW” – including the upcoming new adaptation “The One Piece” and the differences from the original.

There he explained that the idea of a remake was largely driven forward by Eiichiro Oda, despite the first series still running.

He repeatedly noted that the anime had become very extensive over the years and that new viewers in particular could be put off by the length, the slow narrative pace and outdated animation standards.

According to the creator of the globally successful manga, younger generations in particular find it difficult to get excited about the early episodes.

Modern approach with a faster pace

For this reason, “The One Piece” takes a much more modern approach. The plan is for a faster narrative pace with tighter staging, which, among other things, avoids unnecessary stretches and filler content.

In addition, the remake is intended to break away from the original broadcast environment: While the original series ran for many years on a classic “children’s slot” in Japan, the new implementation is specifically aimed at a more mature audience.

WIT Studio is based on its own successful formula, which has already been used in titles such as “Attack on Titan”, “Vinland Saga” and “Spy x Family”. The aim is to reinterpret the story using modern animation technology while achieving a high level of imagery and storytelling.

High standards and global orientation

Wada emphasized that they respect Toei Animation’s work, but want to create a new version that exceeds the expectations of the global fan base – which is also one of the biggest challenges.

The focus of the project continues to be the vision of Eiichiro Oda, who is closely involved in the production and plays a key role in determining the creative direction.

Wada also emphasized that the anime industry is becoming increasingly global and no longer only competes within Japan, but also with international entertainment giants.

Production without TV constraints

Thanks to the collaboration with Netflix and a correspondingly large budget, the team can fully concentrate on quality without being subject to the usual restrictions of weekly TV production.

With regard to the possible use of AI, Wada explained that it is currently seen as a challenge for the studio. Due to legal and practical uncertainties, a wait-and-see approach is being adopted for the time being.

Even though an exact release date is still pending, Wada emphasized that work is currently progressing at full speed. As soon as there is new information to report, you will of course find out about it here.
