Microsoft formalizes the development of its next Xbox, and it would aim to overtake the PS6

It’s now official: Microsoft is actively working on its future console. In an interview given to VarietySarah Bond, president of Xbox, has lifted the veil on the intentions of the American firm. “Our next-generation hardware is in development.” A sober statement, but one full of meaning for the future of Xbox hardware.

After a contrasting year, between record revenue for Game Pass and decline in console sales, Xbox is seeking to regain ground. And this new generation could well mark a technological turning point.

A partnership with AMD to overtake the PS6

Microsoft confirmed that the development involved direct collaboration with AMD. According to the latest leaks, “AMD will build the largest APU ever for the next-gen Xbox”, which would give the future machine more raw power than the PS6.

This strategic partnership would make it possible to embed a tailor-made SoC with unprecedented performance, designed for cloud gaming as well as for native 4K. The project remains shrouded in secrecy, but the ambitions are clear: “The next generation Xbox would surpass the PlayStation 6.”

Nothing has yet filtered out on the design, the precise specifics or the release window. But simply making this work in progress official confirms that Microsoft is preparing a solid response to Sony.

Towards more choice for players?

Another key element of the Sarah Bond interview attracts attention. She mentions a diversification of hardware offerings: “Providing players with another option, in addition to our new generation hardware.” Is this a hybrid model? A portable console? A dedicated cloud box? Nothing is confirmed.

There were rumors that a home portable console project was abandoned due to production requirements imposed by AMD. However, Microsoft still seems to be considering an extension of its range. xCloud type initiatives or connected controllers suggest that a future without a classic console remains explored.

While waiting for more details, one thing is certain: Microsoft is not giving up on the future of hardware and is banking on ambitious technological choices to attract the gamers of tomorrow.
