League of Legends could see a real remake in 2027

No League of Legends 2 but a League of Legends Remake

First revealed by journalist Cecilia D’Anastasio from Bloomberg, before being more or less made official by a short video posted on Riot Games’ official social networks, the studio is currently working on a new full version of League of Legends, known internally as League Next.

Five current and former employees of the studio have reportedly indicated that this project represents “the biggest update in the history of the game”, with a release planned for 2027. According to this information, it would not be a simple content update, but rather an in-depth overhaul, to the point of being more like a remake than a classic evolution.

In the video posted on social networks, managers Andrei Van Roon and Paul Bellezza explain that Riot is not working on a standalone League of Legends 2, but on a major transformation of the current experience. According to Riot, one of the main goals of “League Next” is to modernize the League of Legends interface and client. The game, which still relies on technical foundations dating from its beginnings in 2009, will benefit from a more modern integrated client (in short, without a separate launcher) and a completely redesigned visual presentation. This includes renewed champion models, menus and arenas to bring the gaming experience closer to current standards.

The video published by Riot clarifies that these changes are not limited to an aesthetic facelift and that deep technical improvements are also underway to make maintenance, updates and the addition of new features smoother and faster than before.

Such an overhaul could obviously raise concerns among long-time summoners. League of Legends has an extremely loyal community, but is sometimes reluctant to make too radical changes. The positive point is that this project could also make it possible to revise the ambitions of the MOBA upwards and to modernize itself to focus on derivative productions like the Arcane series (in particular with a slightly more advanced in-game narration), whose success has gone far beyond the video game circle. “League Next” is primarily a project intended to attract new players.
