Highguard was supposed to release unannounced, like Apex Legends, but Geoff Keighley changed all that

Well done champion

For alumni ofApex Legends, it would have been logical to go out Highguard in shadowdrop, that is to say to everyone’s surprise, without any prior announcement. Well know that this was indeed what was planned at Wildlight Entertainment. Chad Grenier, co-founder of the studio, explains however that things changed when they were approached by the producer of The Game Awards :

โ€œ Look, we always planned a surprise outing. Geoff came in and wanted to do something special and get us into the Game Awards. We had planned a surprise release from the beginning, almost since the creation of the company; we did it with Apex and it worked well. We’ve known Geoff for a long time, and he said, “Let me do something.” Looking back, it was perhaps a bit risky, but different, to take a raid-style free-to-play PvP shooter and make something new with it. So, we quickly made a trailer together. I wish it was better received, but in hindsight, it was made to quickly entertain, without really showing the gameplay or what makes it unique. ยป

We can therefore thank Keighley’s hollow nose for this โ€“ dare we say it โ€“ failed presentation of the game, since the producer also offered a free place to the game, where other studios have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to present a trailer. But if we like to heckle the chip lover, the error also comes from the management of Wildlight Entertainment who accepted the proposal by throwing its well-prepared original plan in the trash. The reception of Highguard might have been very different today.

At least everyone is talking about it anyway, and the studio now hopes that the game will convince the public after this false start.
