The rumor has been growing for several hours on social networks, revived by well-known figures in the video game leak scene. According to several sources, Rockstar Games is currently carrying out tests for a possible release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on the future Nintendo Switch 2. If this version actually sees the light of day, it would mark a major turning point in the history of the license on portable consoles.
It all started with a publication by the user “Nash Weedle”, known for his precise information around Nintendo. He says: “I can confirm that a port of GTA VI on Switch 2 is in development. I haven’t spoken much about it so far, out of caution. I can also clarify that: – The delay of the game is not due to this version. – It does not appear that it will be available at launch of the console.
The intervention of NateTheHate, another well-informed insider, reinforced the credibility of this leak. He explains: “I mentioned a while ago that Rockstar was doing some testing to port the game to Switch 2; but testing doesn’t always guarantee a release. I know they’ve been making efforts to see if they can port it to that platform. I don’t know where those efforts stand at the moment.”
An ambitious but technically uncertain project
If the prospect appeals to Nintendo fans, the technical reality could dampen enthusiasm. GTA 6 was designed for the most powerful consoles on the market, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Optimization on more limited hardware could involve heavy graphics and performance compromises.
According to online discussions, a Switch 2 version would likely run with a lower frame rate, reduced resolution, and greatly diminished visual quality. However, this would be a historic event: never has a GTA game of this magnitude been ported to a Nintendo console, although the remastered trilogy has already been available on Switch.
The technical success of such a port would place GTA 6 alongside ambitious adaptations like Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3, which were able to show that a triple A could, with sacrifices, exist on a portable console.
Rockstar keeps silent, Nintendo too
To date, neither Rockstar Games nor Nintendo have officially confirmed the existence of this project. But the simple fact that tests are being conducted by Rockstar demonstrates a desire to explore this option. The Switch 2, expected in 2025 or early 2026, could benefit from technical specifications significantly higher than those of the current Switch, without however competing with the most powerful living room machines.
We will therefore have to wait to find out if GTA VI will really join the Switch 2 catalog. In the meantime, these revelations fuel the growing interest in Nintendo’s future console and confirm, once again, that Rockstar intends to make GTA 6 a global phenomenon, all platforms combined.
