GOG has just been resold by CD Projekt and is changing hands, or almost

The co-founder of the platform becomes master on board again

The separation between CD Projekt and GOG is now complete since the Polish company has decided to resell the platform. But not to just anyone. GOG was acquired by Michał Kiciński, who is none other than the co-founder of the platform, in addition to having co-founded CD Projekt. In short, more than a regular at the house at this stage:

GOG has always been built on strong values and clear principles. When Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński dreamed up GOG in 2007, their vision was simple: to make classic games available to players and ensure that once purchased, a game is truly yours, forever. In a market increasingly marked by mandatory launchers and closed ecosystems, this philosophy is more relevant than ever. This new chapter aims to further strengthen this vision. We want to do more to preserve the classics of the past, celebrate the great games of today, and help shape the classics of tomorrow, including new games with a true retro spirit. »

Additionally, even though CD Projekt will no longer officially pilot GOG, it should be remembered that Michał Kiciński is the second largest shareholder of the Polish company (with 10% of the shares), which means that the bridges are far from being burned. Above all, this will allow GOG to operate more autonomously without being included in the objectives and balance sheets of CD Projekt, while the latter will be able to concentrate on the development of its titles. Naturally, the studio’s games will continue to be released on the platform and will still be very highlighted.

For you, this purchase should not change much in your use of GOG. The game preservation program will continue, and the platform is not changing course by focusing on selling DRM-free games.
