Ghost of Yōtei: after a dazzling success, Sony is already preparing a third game

Ghost of Yōtei continues to be talked about. Barely a month after its release on PS5, the title published by Sony has already reached 3.3 million copies sold, far surpassing the debut of Ghost of Tsushima. A dazzling success which confirms not only the enthusiasm of players, but also PlayStation’s ambitions for this license.

In the wake of this announcement, rumors surrounding a sequel quickly gained momentum. Without making anything official, Sony clearly suggests that a third opus is more than likely. And given the figures, it’s hard to imagine otherwise.

A game-changing commercial box

It took four months to Ghost of Tsushima to reach 5 million copies sold. In comparison, Ghost of Yōtei already displays 3.3 million units sold in just thirty days. A feat all the more notable as the price of the PS5 game is higher than that of its predecessor on PS4.

Sony has also hailed this performance as one of the great successes of the year 2025. And according to current trends, the sequel seems almost inevitable. While waiting for an official announcement, some clues suggest the upcoming arrival of additional content: “we should probably get some new DLC expansions for Ghost Of Yōtei”says the article.

A new opus, but to tell what?

The real question remains that of form. Contrary to what the term “suite” might suggest, Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct continuation of Ghost of Tsushima. The series seems to function more like an anthology, with a new hero and a new plot each time.

In Yōtei, the player played Atsu, a striking protagonist carried by the interpretation of Erika Ishii. His story of revenge captivated players, while introducing them to a new side of feudal Japan. “Erika Ishii did a phenomenal job bringing the character to life, captivating audiences with her tale of revenge and marveling them with the beauty of the open world.”

A return of Jin Sakai, hero of the first game, seems unlikely at this stage. Especially since the anthological format allows newcomers to dive into the universe without having to replay old titles. “Even though Ghost of Tsushima is a great game, no one wants to sit through a AAA game just to understand the context, right?”

Sony keeps the mystery… but the ground is ready

No confirmation has yet been made as to the character or the time of the next episode, but everything suggests that Sony is capitalizing on a winning recipe: sumptuous open world, strong personal story, technical gameplay and anchored in Japanese history.

The studio could therefore choose to keep this formula while exploring another period, or even integrating crossover elements. The prospect of a third opus now seems less of a hypothesis than a simple timetable to be defined.
