Announced during the Xbox Developer Direct, the Fable reboot finally has a launch window: fall 2026. After years of rumors, Playground Games delivered a 20-minute gameplay-rich presentation, which confirmed what fans were hoping for. “Fable will be released in the fall.”
But the real surprise is elsewhere: for the first time, Fable will not be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. It will be released simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. “Fable will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC upon release.” “This is the first time a Fable game has been released on PlayStation.”
An open world from the start, and choices that matter
Playground Games modernizes the Fable formula while keeping its DNA. The game will be a complete open world, where every corner of Albion can be explored from the first minutes. “Fable will be a complete open world, allowing the player to explore any corner of Albion from the start.” The gameplay remains centered on the character’s identity: marriage, property, reputation, moral choices, etc. Interactions with NPCs are enriched by advanced dialogue menus. And the consequences can be as brutal as they are funny: “The villager therefore considers the player a ‘rich asshole’.” Every action changes your alignment, and influences how the world perceives you.
A break with the past… but an assumed tribute
Visually stunning, this new Fable runs on a mixture of Unreal Engine 4 and the in-house Forza Tech engine. We find the British humor so dear to fans of the original trilogy, and a redesigned progression system which gives more freedom to the player.
The story takes place somewhere between the first and second episodes, with the return of the Heroes’ Guild, which disappeared in Fable 2. Enough to revive nostalgia, while anchoring this reboot in a new era.
What we expect between now and its release
There are still a lot of gray areas: the exact timeline, combat, customization, and even potential multiplayer interactions. But the presence of Fable in the Xbox Developer Direct, and the opening to the PS5, is enough to arouse curiosity. The game is expected to enter testing this summer. A demo or beta is not ruled out in the coming months.
