Elden Ring creates a surprise and formalizes the announcement most awaited by fans

Elden Ring has just checked the box that the entire community has been waiting for: after a year of rumors and set leaks, the live action film finally formalizes its cinema release date and a complete cast worthy of an AAA. The announcement, made via press release from Bandai Namco Entertainment and official social networks on April 20, 2026, also confirms an IMAX format and a massive budget.

Adaptation of the cult RPG Hidetaka Miyazakiwhose universe was co-written by George RR Martinthe feature film is produced by A24 and written by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War). For a game that has sold more than 30 million copies, this is the announcement most scrutinized by fans. It remains to be seen when the film Elden Ring will arrive in France and what this 5-star casting hides.

Elden Ring film: a surprise announcement that fans were no longer expecting

The film project was first confirmed in May 2025, with only two certainties: A24 to production and Alex Garland to realization. Then nothing more, except a few filming leaks showing a statue of Marika, ruins reminiscent of the Church of Marika and pylons above Limgrave, which kept the hype going.

On April 20, 2026, Bandai Namco Entertainment finally breaks the silence: worldwide release date, full casting, confirmation of an experience designed for IMAX and filming in the United Kingdom. The publisher thus validates that we are not facing a small derivative project, but a large production designed for the big screen.

On the writing side, Alex Garland prepared an “epic” 160-page script, accompanied by 40 pages of images, which he presented directly to FromSoftware in Japan. A fierce player, he confided to IGN: “For me, Malenia is the toughest.” “I’m on my seventh playthrough of the game. I’ve leveled up, got a lot of power, a cool sword, and all that, and I’m throwing myself at it again and again.”

Elden Ring film: 5-star casting and loyalty to the game at the center of the project

At the top of the bill, we find Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Civil War), Ben Whishaw (Q in James Bond) and Nick Offerman (The Last of Us). They are surrounded by Tom Burke, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Emma Laird, Jefferson Hall, Havana Rose Liu And John Hodgkinson. Their roles remain secret, which leaves the door open to all lore theories.

The real “Dark Souls surprise” comes from Peter Serafinowiczalready familiar with FromSoftware for having dubbed Pate in Dark Souls II. This choice creates a direct bridge with the Soulsborne saga and reassures us of the desire to stick to the DNA of the studio.

On the creator side, George RR Martin greeted Alex Garland as a “first-rate director” and described A24 as “great”. He called himself “optimistic” and even shared a video titled “Why the Elden Ring Movie WON’T Suck.” For his part, Garland further explained: “It’s the technique I learned playing Dark Souls”, before summarizing his approach with “like monkeys with typewriters. You just have to persevere and persist, and one day you end up winning”.

Elden Ring film: release date, XXL budget and what awaits French theaters

The key question is finally answered: the film Elden Ring will be released on March 3, 2028 in the United States, in IMAX, and on March 1, 2028 in France. Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 in the United Kingdom, for approximately 100 days.

With a budget announced at more than $100 million (around €95 million), this is one of the most ambitious projects ever carried out by A24. Everything points to a confident dark fantasy blockbuster, designed to make the most of premium theaters.

The storyline remains under wraps, but many fans are hoping for a prequel centered around the Shatter rather than a simple rehash of the quest for a Shatterless One. If this adaptation keeps its promises, it could pave the way for other forays from FromSoftware into cinema. In the meantime, the release date of the film Elden Ring is now checked in all calendars.
