Beyond the Peak, a turn-based exploration and climbing roguelite planned for this year

Pull the rope

In Ascenders: Beyond the Peakyou will have to lead a team of mountaineers tasked with recovering a set of artifacts from the top of cursed mountain peaks, on behalf of a mysterious billionaire. For this, the first aspect of the game will come into play: the preparation of your expedition, the progress of your teammates and the management of your explorations. But the crux of the matter will take place when you yourself have to progress on fragile and crumbly icy and rocky walls, through vegetation that can turn out to be toxic, but also by avoiding avalanches and other mysterious attacks from threats lurking in the shadows, in the pure tradition of the famous HP Lovecraft.

You can see this by watching the announcement trailer above: the terrain of ascension will itself prove to be your first enemy. Each of the expeditions that you prepare will take place according to several ascensions, but as you progress, they will become more and more artificial, even supernatural and hostile within ecosystems disturbed by the presence of these cursed artifacts.

To make things easier for you, each biome will have its own dangers, its own enemies whether visible or hidden, all with the same goal: to make you consume your resources to the point of exhaustion as you approach the top. And since your team will be constantly physically connected by a unique rope system, each situation can create challenges and opportunities to destabilize you, as a team. Will you choose to secure allies, or rather anchor your own escalation route at the risk of putting one or more teammates in safety or on the contrary in danger?

The success of the expedition will depend on your teamwork

Small clarification nevertheless: Ascenders: Beyond the Peak remains a solo game in which you will have to lead your entire expedition yourself, choosing each role from nine distinct classes. Only three classes have so far been revealed, the others will follow as they approach launch:

  • The Highlander : this is the one who will clear the passage by pushing back the enemies from the top of the rock wall
  • The Scout or the Pathfinder : he will move vertically thanks to a grappling hook
  • The Sapper will use explosives and guns to reshape the battlefield

Your role will therefore be to learn the advantages and disadvantages of each class to combine them and create synergies capable of making you triumph. Decisions presented as decisive between the survival and failure of the expedition. Since despite everything, death could be inevitable and will always remain irreversible, with permanent consequences.

Since the rope will be your only physical link, you will sometimes have to make tough decisions to progress: continue to fight to save one of you or cut the cord to try to save as many people as possible who are still in shape. Despite everything, the developers of Ascenders: Beyond the Peak warn that survivors of these morally harsh phases will then carry the mental and physical burden of their fallen colleagues, making future climbs even more grueling.

A chilling turn-based roguelite

There remains one aspect that we have not yet covered: roguelite. Indeed, death after death, you will ultimately learn to understand your environment and use it as a weapon for your own purpose. You will gain greater control over each climb thanks to the preparation essential to your success. Thus, before each expedition, you will be asked to develop and manage your base camp by unlocking new tools, new technologies, but also new characters and permanent improvements allowing you to strengthen your ranks and go further.

Just like between two climbs, your triumphant but exhausted crew will have to do everything to take advantage of base camp to treat their wounds, prepare meals, repair their equipment, make new tools and also strengthen their bonds so as not to mentally sink through nocturnal sequences mixing events and discussions. But you must not forget that if you play a pawn, the mountain will respond just as much. The turn-based approach then takes a dramatic turn since you won’t be able to anticipate everything.

But let’s not leave aside the main objective: the recovery of artifacts. These will have different sizes, values and effects. The most powerful of them will allow you to systemically transform the synergy of your team. You will be allowed to use them during your climbs, at your own risk if the mountain decides to take revenge, but you can also exchange them with rival factions capable of modifying your next climbs or the equipment of your base camp.

You see it, Ascenders: Beyond the Peak promises great games where the unpredictable could well give you a hard time. The roguelite will be released in the third quarter of 2026 first on PC in early access, before a release on consoles planned later. The game can already be added to your wishlist on Steam.
