Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is reborn with a next-gen 8K remaster

The wind is blowing in Edward Kenway’s sails again. Twelve years after its initial release, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag returns with a vengeance thanks to the work of an enthusiast, determined to bring piracy into the 21st century. Published on YouTube by creator Digital Dreams, this amateur remaster literally transforms the original game into a visual feat, to the point of making you forget its age. Up for grabs: a muscular configuration, ray tracing effects pushed to the maximum and 8K resolution at 60 frames per second.

A technical feat reserved for war machines

What was supposed to be a simple fan project has become a real technological showcase. Digital Dreams, known for its modded remasters, delivers a stunning eight-minute video where we rediscover the lively streets of Kingston and the beauty of Havana at sunrise. The rendering is such that one could believe in a game released in 2025. Between the reworked lighting, the ultra-realistic rain effects, the high-resolution textures and the finesse of the animations, this modified Black Flag seems to rival the most recent productions.

Not accessible to all players

But not everyone will be able to embark on this odyssey. The Digital Dreams remaster runs on an RTX 5090, a powerful graphics card still inaccessible to the majority of gamers. Even with a high-end PC, running the game in 8K remains a technical challenge. “Even if they opt for a remake, they will surely focus on other games before, like those of Ezio.”, estimates a Reddit user, cooled by Ubisoft’s current priorities.

Fans take over while waiting for Ubisoft

Another creator, GamesGlow, is also working on its own remastered version, revealed little by little on Twitter. This amateur project, in progress for more than six months, has sparked enthusiastic reactions on social networks. “Dude quietly leaked footage of the AC Black Flag remake,” jokes @Aren2ouioui, while “Oh wow, it looks like the AC3 remaster,” replies @BeansGoodTakes. “Why not release it as is instead of remaking it?” adds another admiring fan.

On the Ubisoft side, radio silence. Despite persistent rumors, no official remake has been confirmed. The publisher is currently working on Assassin’s Creed Jade (mobile game) and Assassin’s Creed Hexe, its next big title. In the meantime, it’s the fans who are holding the helm… and showing what the future of Assassin’s Creed could really look like.
