After 28 years: First “Evangelion” film back in the cinema charts

Last weekend, the anime classic “Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth” was shown again in 90 selected cinemas in Japan for the first time in 28 years – and promptly made it into the cinema charts. We summarize.

30th anniversary

To mark its 30th anniversary, the popular “Evangelion” franchise is currently inviting people to the “Tsuki-Ichi Eva Evangelion 30th Movie Fest”: between October 2025 and February 2026, a feature film will be shown as a revival in the cinema every month.

“Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth” kicked off – and with considerable success: from October 10th to 12th, 2025, the film attracted a total of 72,653 viewers to the cinemas and grossed 118,838,800 yen (around 674,000 euros), which meant it reached tenth place in the cinema charts last weekend.

The first 67 minutes of the approximately one and a half hour screen spin-off are a heavily abbreviated summary of the first 24 episodes of “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, before the final 27 minutes further develop the plot. The premiere took place on March 15, 1997 in Japan.

Since “Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth” is closely linked to “Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion”, another film will be brought back exceptionally in October. The individual dates therefore look like this:

  • October 10th to 16th, 2025: »Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth«
  • October 24th to 30th, 2025: »Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion«
  • November 14th to 20th, 2025: »Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone«
  • December 12th to 18th, 2025: »Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance«
  • January 9th to 15th, 2026: »Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo«
  • February 13th to 19th, 2026: »Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time«

In this country, the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” films are available on Netflix, while Prime Video has the four-part “Rebuild of Evangelion” film series in its program. A disc release was carried out by the publisher LEONINE Anime.
