a return of the game in 2026?

A model already used for Sonic

THE Korean classification committee has listed this new edition (via Gematsu), without it having yet been officially announced by SEGA. This type of classification generally precedes an announcement in the following days or weeks, as has already been the case for other games in the license.

The idea of a “Definitive Edition” is not new for Sonic. Several recent titles have already benefited from enriched versions such as Sonic Mania Plus And Sonic Origins Plus. These editions usually included additional content, technical improvements, or gameplay additions. There is also the possibility that Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition or a sort of “light remaster”, like the many Sonic games which have benefited from this treatment.

As a reminder, Sonic Frontiers was released in 2022 and had a fairly significant following with free content (notably cosmetic) and free DLC which offered to play new characters and take on tough challenges. Without reaching the critical heights of the best 2D opuses of the license, the last 3D episode managed to seduce thanks to an original approach which was good after several very average opuses. This has also resulted in notable commercial success with 4.5 million units sold according to the latest figures communicated by SEGA.

If this is confirmed, Sonic Frontiers could well return to the forefront in 2026 with a more complete version. It remains to be seen whether it will offer enough new features to appeal to those who have already traveled the original adventure.
