A cult Lord of the Rings game comes to Switch 2 with a free update

March 25 is not just an ordinary date for fantasy fans. Between Reading Day dedicated to Tolkien and the 25th anniversary of the film The Fellowship of the Ring, the universe of Lord of the Rings is more than ever in the spotlight. And this year, a surprise is added to these celebrations.

The Tales of the Shire game, released in July 2025 after several postponements, returns with a version optimized for Nintendo Switch 2. Available now, this free update aims to correct certain technical defects while offering a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Tales of the Shire on Switch 2, an improved version available immediately

When it was released, Tales of the Shire sparked mixed reactions. If its warm atmosphere and its universe faithful to Tolkien had attracted some of the players, its lack of technical finish had been singled out. This new Switch 2 version is a game changer. The game now benefits from improved resolution and better fluidity, elements particularly expected for this type of experience focused on relaxation. The watercolor visual style, already present in the original version, benefits directly from these improvements, making the landscapes of the Shire sharper and more immersive.

A simulation of life in the Shire as soothing as ever

In Tales of the Shire, players take on the role of a hobbit recently settled in Bywater. The goal is not to fight or save the world, but to build a peaceful life in the heart of the Shire. Throughout the adventure, different activities punctuate daily life: agriculture, picking, cooking and interactions with locals. The game focuses on gentle progression, focused on relationships and the development of the village. This approach is reminiscent of some popular life simulation games, where the experience relies more on atmosphere than difficulty.

Technical improvements expected but still limited

Despite this update, not everything has been transformed. Certain features specific to the Nintendo Switch 2 are not used. For example, the Joy-Con 2’s mouse-style controls don’t seem to be used for decoration, unlike other games of the same genre. This does not prevent this version from being considered the most successful to date, in particular thanks to the numerous updates already deployed since the initial release of the game.

A free upgrade for already equipped players

Good news for players who already purchased the game on the first Nintendo Switch: the upgrade to the Switch 2 version is completely free. For new players, the title is priced at $34.99, the same price as the original version. With this improved version, Tales of the Shire stands out as the first Lord of the Rings game to benefit from a dedicated adaptation for the Switch 2. A development which could pave the way for other titles from this universe on the new console.
