While Tears of the Kingdom is preparing to blow out its third candle, eyes are already turning towards the future of the Zelda saga. Officially, Nintendo remains silent. Unofficially, things are speeding up. According to journalist Nick Baker – accustomed to reliable leaks – the next opus is indeed in development, intended to accompany the future Nintendo Switch 2. A release in 2027 would be possible, although nothing has yet been confirmed. “The engine will be the same as that of Breath of the Wild And Tears of the Kingdombut with notable improvements”, says Baker during a broadcast of XboxEra.
An interdimensional Zelda?
The heart of the innovation would be found in the game mechanics. According to the information obtained, the next Zelda would integrate an interdimensional dimension. It would not simply be a matter of changing zones like in a Metroidvania, but of crossing parallel realities.
An example given by Baker: a bull chases you in one dimension, hits a wall in another, which triggers a mechanism elsewhere. This interlocking logic would allow for much more complex puzzles than in the past, increasing the level of challenge for players.
Unprecedented powers to manipulate reality
Still according to the same report, Link would this time have new dimensional breaking powers. In addition to the classic exploration and combat capabilities, he could “jump between dimensions” at will, opening the way to completely new gameplay phases.
This orientation slightly recalls the spirit of the temples of Skyward Sword or temporal faults ofOcarina of Timebut here pushed to its climax, in a complete open world.
Patience required: no exit for several years
Even though the project is moving forward, no official announcement is planned for 2026. According to Baker, Nintendo seems to be aiming for a longer development cycle, with a potential release in 2027. The Switch 2 would therefore serve as an ideal launch medium for this new epic.
Until then, Nintendo could continue to explore the Zelda universe in other ways, such as spin-offs like Age of Calamity. But for those who hope to find Link in a brand new main adventure, you will still have to wait.
