In December, users of PlayStation Plus Essential were spoiled: LEGO Horizon Adventures, Killing Floor 3, Neon White and many other titles have enriched their library. But from January 2026, a major change comes into effect: PS4 games will no longer be included in the monthly offer. Only PS5 games will now be offered to subscribers.
A choice accepted by Sony, but unpopular
Sony explained this strategic shift in a statement: “As many of our players currently play on PS5 and have shifted to accessing PS5 titles through the Monthly Games and Game Catalog benefit, PlayStation Plus is also evolving with this trend. »
A statement that assumes an orientation towards the future. However, the reaction of the players was not long in coming. On Reddit, one user writes: “Five years after the launch of the PS5, Sony has no reason to continue supporting the PS4 in such a big way. »
But for others, it is a blatant injustice. A critical comment: “This is unacceptable. We are being pushed to spend by forcing the switch to the PS5. »
Solutions… provided you pay more
PS4 users are not completely abandoned. The catalog PlayStation Plus Extra will continue to include PS4 games. But the subscription is more expensive, and does not offer new monthly titles. However, an alternative exists: add PS5 games to your library via the mobile appwith a view to future migration to the new console. A user recalls: “PS4 users can always add PS5 games via the site or the app, while waiting to play them one day. »
A page turns for the PS4
With more than 117 million units sold worldwide, the PS4 has made video game history. But its life cycle is coming to an end. Sony’s decision marks a new stage: that of a generational transition which leaves no one indifferent.
It remains to be seen whether this strategy will really encourage the last PS4 users to take the plunge, or whether Sony risks losing part of its loyal community in the process.
