As the end of 2025 approaches, many players are already scrutinizing the release schedule planned for 2026. Among the most anticipated titles is 007 First Light, an action-adventure game centered on the origins of James Bond, developed by IO Interactive. Announced as an ambitious project, the title moves away from the studio’s usual tone to offer a more narrative experience, often compared to Uncharted.
Presented several times during major video game events, 007 First Light recently made headlines again during the Game Awards. On this occasion, the developers confirmed the presence of Lenny Kravitz in the casting and recalled a release date set for March 27, 2026. An announcement quickly followed by a change of schedule.
007 First Light changes date and now aims for May 2026
Less than two weeks after this official confirmation, IO Interactive announced that 007 First Light would not ultimately be released at the end of March. The game is now expected for May 27, 2026. The information was made public by Hakan Abrak, the studio’s CEO, in a message addressed directly to players.
This announcement immediately raised questions about the state of development. Hakan Abrak, however, wanted to reassure the community by explaining that the postponement was not linked to major difficulties. “The game is progressing well and is fully playable from start to finish,” he said.
IO Interactive mentions a deadline to refine the experience
According to the manager, these two additional months should allow the studio to make the final adjustments before the release. “These two additional months will therefore allow us to refine the experience and guarantee an optimal version upon its release,” specifies Hakan Abrak in his statement.
The CEO also insists on the importance of this choice for the future of the project. “We are confident that this ensures the long-term success of 007 First Light and we sincerely thank you for your patience and continued support since the game’s introduction.” IO Interactive also promises new information at the beginning of 2026.
An exit window that raises questions about GTA 6
This postponement also raises questions about the overall schedule of major releases. Initially positioned in a very busy period, 007 First Light now finds itself further from Grand Theft Auto VIa title that many studios prefer to avoid simultaneous release.
In the industry, the fear of finding yourself eclipsed by such a juggernaut is very real. Some observers wonder whether 007 First Light would have kept its March date if GTA 6 had maintained its own calendar.
A younger James Bond at the heart of an ambitious project
Beyond this change of date, 007 First Light remains one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by IO Interactive. The game will offer an approach centered on a younger James Bond, still in the training phase.
Action, infiltration and narration will be at the heart of the experience, with a stated desire to deliver a cinematic adventure while retaining the freedom of gameplay dear to the studio. Expected on PC and consoles, 007 First Light will now have to convince players on May 27, 2026.
