Prince of Persia: the remake is coming very soon after years of uncertainty

Announced in 2020, paused, then restarted with the greatest discretion, the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has long looked like a cursed project. But the tide is turning. While fans despaired of seeing the game one day released, Ubisoft finally provided concrete news during the presentation of its latest financial results.

Now developed by Ubisoft Montrealsupported by the Toronto teams, this project formerly led by the studios of Pune and Mumbai seems well and truly revived. Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will be released between January 1 and March 31, 2026thus confirming its registration in the current fiscal year. And for the first time in years, a more precise date has leaked.

A release window mentioned for January 2026

It’s the media InsiderGamingrenowned for its internal revelations, which lifts the veil on this expected information. According to its journalist Mike Straw, “Prince of Persia Remake is currently scheduled for release in mid-January 2026”. The author specifies that the game would even precede the highly anticipated remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, also under development at Ubisoft.

Another point raised: the Sands of Time remake should reappear with great fanfare during the Game Awards 2025, scheduled for the night of December 11 to 12. According to information from Straw, “there should not only be a new trailer, but also the release date”. A stage revelation which would mark the true media return of a title that has remained in the shadows for far too long.

Chaotic development now under control

The story of this remake has all the makings of an obstacle course. Widely criticized at its first presentation for its graphics considered outdated, the project was put on pause in 2021. Ubisoft even announced its withdrawal of pre-orders. Since then, everything has been started from scratch, to the point of changing the very identity of the game: the word “remake” was gradually removed from official communicationa sign of a deeper repositioning.

At this stage, few concrete details have filtered out on the mechanics of the new project. Only one image was revealed last June. But internal statements suggest that this overhaul could go well beyond simple technical modernization. Ubisoft seems to be banking on a careful reinvention, capable of respecting the original material while meeting the expectations of current players.

Why this return is so important for Ubisoft

The resurrection of Prince of Persia comes in a strategic context for Ubisoft. The firm is seeking to rebalance its 2026 calendar with strong and recognizable licenses. By re-releasing one of its cult franchises in a redesigned version, the publisher is sending a strong signal to nostalgic fans and action-adventure fans.

Furthermore, this return comes as Ubisoft is multiplying AAA projects: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, and even The Division Resurgence. In this landscape, Prince of Persia must find a special place – that of an emblematic narrative game, with gameplay combining agility, puzzles and combat, in a mythical oriental universe.
