A free tactical FPS with touches of Dead Space and Resident Evil is coming soon to Steam. Horror, loot, PvPvE and military style: an explosive cocktail not to be missed.
His name is Rules of Engagement: The Gray Stateand it could well become the next horror phenomenon on PC. Available for free at launch, this first-person shooter combines survival mechanics, tactical combat and an atmosphere worthy of classic space terror. A rare proposition in Steam’s free-to-play catalog, especially with such a level of visual polish.
Dead Space in PvPvE: a unique game system
The scenario immediately sets the scene. “You are a Strider: an elite agent hired by an enigmatic organization to venture into the Gray State, an unstable dimension populated by terrifying monstrosities and alien artifacts.” In this distorted world, everyone has the same goal: “Your mission is simple: recover the Vertex, a priceless artifact located at the heart of the anomaly, and survive in a nightmarish, lawless borderland where rival squads fight for the same objective.”
The gameplay loop is based on a round format: you start each session with basic equipment, then you progress by eliminating monsters to improve your arsenal. Once the countdown begins, you have two options: flee to a safe extraction zone to secure your winnings, or attempt to recover the Vertex. But be careful: “It’s not about saving the world. It’s just business.”
And as in any good PvPvE, it is often the human who becomes the real threat: other teams will try to kill you to steal your progress and recover the artifact in your place.
Three classes, zero Pay-to-Win: an attractive promise
The game offers three very distinct archetypes:
- Sledgethe armored brute, perfect for taking on the front lines.
- Pyroexpert in area control with gas and flames.
- Phantoma stealthy assassin who relies on precision and discretion.
While no official release date has yet been set, the developers confirm that the title will be completely free. And to reassure skeptical players: “The developer also promises no pay-to-win system in its model, so fingers crossed that the overall experience is fair and balanced.”
For fans of resident Evil, Dead SpaceOr Stalker 2, The Gray State could well fill a void, by combining a horrific atmosphere and tactical multiplayer gameplay.
