It’s rare, but it happens. Dead Island 2one of the most anticipated (and delayed) survival RPGs of the decade, is now free for all PlayStation 5 users, even without a PS Plus subscription. A perfect opportunity to dive into the sunny, zombie-infested hell of Los Angeles and let off some steam this Halloween weekend.
Developed by Dambuster Studiosthe game had experienced chaotic development, postponed for almost ten years after a first announcement onE3 2014. But since its release in April 2023, it has been able to convince more than 20 million playersdespite sometimes mixed criticism. A nice score which allows its publisher, Deep Silverto celebrate this milestone in style.
A sequel already in preparation, but kept secret
If this seduction operation falls apart now, it is no coincidence. Dead Island 2 could well serve as a springboard for its own sequel. On the occasion of this symbolic milestone, the studio confided: “This is not yet the final version. Dambuster Studios is already working on the sequel. For the moment, the details remain confidential, the epidemic is far from over…”
Fans are already seeing it Dead Island 3 in ambush, although Dambuster could also opt for a spin-off or a new series in the same universe. The mystery remains, but the intention is clear: the story of zombies is not over.
An imperfect, but fun and enjoyable RPG to discover in 2025
If you missed Dead Island 2 when it comes out, or you are hesitant to buy it, this free version is the best entry point. The action takes place in a Los Angeles ravagedwhere you play a survivor with mysterious powers facing hordes of the undead. The gameplay focuses on the brutality of hand-to-hand combat, customizable weapons and a resolutely offbeat tone.
The progression is fluid, the exploration efficient, even if some players regretted areas that were a little too compartmentalized. The adventure comes to an end in about fifteen hoursbut it offers good moments of thrills, especially with its very graphic dismemberment system.
For a free game, it offers solid content, a good release of steam, and a taste of what could await us in a future episode.
