A free Steam game inspired by Silent Hill and Resident Evil is coming out for Halloween, and it’s already scary

As Halloween approaches, an old cult game resurfaces on Steam, ready to awaken horror fans’ nightmares. “Dementium: The Ward”, a game initially released on Nintendo DS in 2007, arrives in a remastered version on PC on October 27, 2025. Its suffocating atmosphere and its assumed inspirations, between Silent Hill and Resident Evil, already make it a must-have of the season.

Immersed in an abandoned hospital populated by deformed creatures, the player tries to understand what happened to him, while trying to escape alive. The principle is simple: move forward, survive, and pick up the pieces of a scenario that is as mysterious as it is worrying. Despite its humble origins, this first-person horror game marked a generation, and its resurrection on PC is timely.

A hospital nightmare resurrected in 4K… or 240P

The game returns with a complete technical facelift. 4K resolution, revised textures, and support for modern displays don’t come alone: a 240P retro mode is also offered, with optional CRT scanlines, to recreate that grimy, scary aesthetic of horror games of yesteryear. Enough to appeal to both nostalgic fans and newcomers.

“Enter the twisting corridors of Dementium: The Ward, the cult survival horror game that redefined laptop terror, now remastered for PC with support for 4K resolution,” announces the game’s official page on Steam. A program that recalls the sensations of Outlast, mixed with Doom, with this clinical atmosphere that we never forget.

The experience is intended to be sensory and intimate. “Alone, in an abandoned hospital, with no memory of your arrival, you will wake up to grotesque creatures, unravel a terrifying mystery and fight to survive with only improvised weapons and your wits. Every glow, every echo in the corridor, every drop of blood tells an unforgettable story.”

Dementium, this Silent Hill that Konami never wanted

Little known fact: “Dementium” could have been a Silent Hill game. In 2023, creator Jools Watsham confided having presented the project to Konami in the hope of making it an official spin-off. The response was scathing: “We would not entrust the intellectual property of Silent Hill to a team like yours.” This rejection will mark the turning point in development, giving birth to an original work… which was able to conquer its own audience.

Since then, the game has had several lives: a 3DS version in 2015, then ports to Switch, PS4 and PS5. The Steam version constitutes both a return to the sources and a final consecration for this title which has long remained on the fringes. For fans of cold sweats and oppressive atmospheres, this remake is undoubtedly the unmissable event this month of October.
