PS6: Sony’s new console would be released in 2027, at the same time as the next Xbox

Rumors are intensifying about the next generation of consoles. According to several sources, including the leaker KeplerL2 on NeoGAF and the Moore’s Law Is Dead YouTube channel, the PlayStation 6 is planned for 2027. A release which would coincide with that of the future Xbox, powered by a brand new AMD chip.

The first to mention this date is KeplerL2, a regular in reliable leaks in the tech sector. On a thread dedicated to Project Amethyst, a collaboration between Sony and AMD, he said: “It’s not just on the table, it’s the plan, unless unexpected delays occur.” This partnership, already at work on the PS5, seems to be strengthening to give life to a new, more powerful and ambitious generation.

New technologies in the boxes of Sony and AMD

Sony recently released a video featuring Mark Cerny, architect of the PS5, with Jack Huynh, director at AMD. Together, they detailed several technological innovations. At the end of the exchange, Cerny hinted that these advances would be integrated into a future console, saying he was “very excited about the idea of integrating them into a future insole in a few years.” A barely veiled nod to the PS6.

Among the new techniques mentioned: a feature called “Universal Compression”, supposed to free up GPU bandwidth. Performance-wise, Moore’s Law Is Dead suggests that the PS6 could offer power equivalent to that of an RTX 5090 in ray tracing. A significant advancement that would place the console in a completely different category.

A more expensive, but more powerful Xbox?

On the Microsoft side, the ambitions are just as high. The future Xbox would feature an AMD APU called “Magnus”, with an RDNA 5 architecture. According to MLID, the machine would be designed as a hybrid between console and PC. “I’ve heard from even more sources that Microsoft is talking with partners behind the scenes and openly saying that 2027 is the launch date for Magnus,” says the videographer.

This Xbox would be more powerful than the PS6, but also more expensive. The cause? Wider architecture, complex bridge dies, and more onboard RAM. Enough to seduce the most demanding players… provided you pay the price.

A generation designed for mobile gamers?

Another important revelation: the two consoles could arrive with companion devices. Sony is reportedly working on a portable machine that is more efficient than the Switch 2 and the Xbox Ally X. A way to capture an increasingly mobile audience, without denying power.

If all this information remains unconfirmed by Sony and Microsoft, their consistency and the convergence of sources leave little room for doubt. In 2027, the console war could well resume with a vengeance, against a backdrop of cutting-edge technologies and new uses.
