Live-action series for “Kiki’s Little Delivery Service” announced

The story of “Kiki’s Little Delivery Service” is being adapted as a live-action series, which is currently being created as part of an international collaboration between KADOKAWA, BBC Studios and the British production company Wheel in Motion. We summarize the details below.

The novel celebrates its 40th anniversary

In terms of content, the series will be based primarily on the first volume of the six-part book series by Eiko Kadono and will tell about the young witch Kiki, who leaves her home and sets up her own delivery service in the port town of Koriko. Ten episodes are initially planned, each running around 30 minutes.

Irena Brignull, who worked on “Skellig”, “The Boxtrolls” and “The Little Prince” among others, was commissioned to write the script.

The original novel, which was first published in Japan in 1985, gained international fame thanks to the 1989 anime adaptation of the same name by Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki. In March 2014, a live-action film was released in Japanese cinemas.

KADOKAWA describes the new series as a special tribute to the work, which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, and emphasizes that the British creative team is working closely with the original author Eiko Kadono.

The writer herself was also pleased about the project and explained that Kiki was now setting off on a new adventure. She is looking forward to seeing the story come to life in its new form.

A start date for the live-action series has not yet been announced. As usual, we will keep you updated.
