DC President sees clear advantages in manga over US comics

DC Comics President Jim Lee explained in a recent interview why he believes manga and anime are superior to Western comics in some areas. We summarize below.

Greater diversity

In an interview with Nikkei

While the American comics market focuses primarily on superheroes, Lee says manga covers a much wider range of genres – from sports and cooking stories to drama or slice-of-life titles.

In contrast to the West, comics and animations in Japan are not only perceived as a medium for children. Instead, anime and manga have long been a natural part of general pop culture there and are consumed across generations.

Finally, the DC manager emphasized that many young people around the world are specifically looking for content that differs from classic Western narrative patterns – and this, according to him, is one of the reasons why anime and manga are becoming increasingly popular internationally.

For him, the success of the Japanese publishing industry could serve as a model from which Western comics could learn in the future.
