Several international media companies are once again taking increased action against anime and manga piracy and have announced new legal measures and further collaborations. We summarize below.
International cooperation against piracy
As the Japanese anti-piracy organization CODA recently announced, the existing cooperation with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) has been officially extended. The MPA is an association of major US film, television and streaming companies that, among other things, promotes copyright protection and the fight against piracy.
In this context, the seven members of the MPA, namely Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, Universal and Amazon MGM Studios, are increasingly working with courts, domain providers and international authorities to identify the operators of illegal websites and enforce blocks.
Accordingly, the partnership is intended to enable further measures against illegal anime and manga platforms in the future, after websites such as “HiAnime”, “Bato.to” and “AnimePlay” have already gone offline in recent months.
Further legal action
It was recently announced that the anti-piracy alliance ACE, which is also represented by the MPA, has applied to a US court for the release of personal data of the operators of a total of 15 large piracy websites.
The affected platforms also include “Anime4up,” on which series such as “Mob Psycho 100” and “Hi Score Girl,” among others, are said to have been distributed illegally.
Despite the numerous shutdowns, online piracy remains a major problem, with new mirror and clone websites regularly emerging. The organizations involved therefore announced that they would further expand their measures in the future. We will of course keep you up to date with any news.
