Free users of YouTube in France will finally be able to exit the application without cutting their video. The mode Picture-in-Picture (PiP), long locked behind the subscription YouTube Premiumbegins rolling out for free on mobile worldwide.
After years of frustration, Google is backtracking on this function that has become emblematic of the Premium pack. The group promises a global deployment on Android and iOS in the coming months: here is what is concretely changing and how to take advantage of it.
Free YouTube Picture-in-Picture: what does Google’s announcement change?
At the end of April 2026, Google confirmed on its community forum that PiP would be “progressively deployed to all users around the world over the coming months”, recalls Les Numériques. In other words, the function is no longer reserved for paying subscribers, even in Europe where until now it remained a key commercial argument.
For the record, PiP mode allows you to shrink a video into a small floating player in order to continue playing while returning to the home screen or opening another application. It was already enough to press the Home button, or swipe up, but this flexibility was reserved for Premium customers, except in the United States where the function has been free since 2018.
Important change to note: the Picture-in-Picture Free only applies to long, non-music content. Clips, music videos, and background listening remain associated with YouTube Premium And Premium Litewhich also retains the absence of advertisements and offline downloading.
How to use YouTube’s free Picture-in-Picture mode on Android and iOS
On Android, most recent smartphones already support PiP at the system level. After updating the application YouTube installed, simply launch a long non-musical video, then return to the home screen: the player transforms into a small rectangular window, movable in the corners of the screen and resizable across the width.
On iPhone and iPad, PiP support requires at least iOS 15 or iPadOS 15. When the function is activated on your account, the behavior is similar: you launch a compatible video, you make a gesture to exit the app, and the mini-player remains displayed on top of your other applications, ideal for replying to a message or consulting the web without interrupting the viewing.
When will Picture-in-Picture YouTube be available to everyone, and what’s left for YouTube Premium?
The deployment of free PiP is happening in waves. It is therefore normal that certain French accounts do not yet have access to it, even with an up-to-date smartphone. To maximize your chances, check that your Android or iOS system is up to date, as well as the application YouTubethen wait a few weeks if the floating window does not appear yet.
Despite this welcome gift, YouTube Premium maintains solid arguments for heavy content consumers. Paid subscription retains ad-free playback, offline downloads, background or Picture-in-Picture music and clips, and all services YouTube Music without interruption. For the majority of users who mainly watch long videos and simply want to multitask, on the other hand, the mode Picture-in-Picture free should be more than enough.
