Steam Machine: Valve finally reveals the release date and it’s very close

After months of silence and postponements, Valve has finally clarified the timetable for the Steam Machine. In an interview relayed by IGN and spotted by ComicBook, the studio confirms that the SteamOS home machine is approaching release and promises to share official information on the date and price “soon”. Enough to revive interest around this highly anticipated mini living room PC.

Announced on November 12, 2025 alongside the Steam Frame and new Steam Controllerthe Steam Machine had slipped from “early 2026” to “first half of 2026”, then simply “in 2026” on the Steam store, as noted by Numerama and FrAndroid. The speech of engineer Pierre-Louis Griffais changes the situation: the hardware is finalized, only the logistics and some software finishing touches remain. It remains to be understood what this exit presented as imminent actually means.

Steam Machine: What new release window did Valve really just announce?

At the beginning of February, Valve officially postponed the Steam Machine to first half of 2026explaining that the shortage of DDR5 RAM and SSD forced it to review both the date and the price, recalls 01net. At the beginning of March, the sheet briefly switched to a vague “in 2026” before returning to the first half of the year, while SteamDB replaced the mention “early 2026” with a simple “soon”.

At the end of April, the speech became clearer. Pierre-Louis Griffais explains to IGN: “In terms of Steam Machine, yeah, it’s really just about the logistics of getting it into user’s hands. If you’ve used the Steam Deck docked, the experience is pretty much there. It’s that plus some more GPU horsepower. Of course, there’s a ton of polish and other feature work that we can do, but at the end of the day, the core experience is there.” When Valve also promises to communicate “soon”, the message is clear: barring another hard hit on the components market, the window is narrowing over the coming weeks.

Steam Machine: what does this PC console promise for your living room?

The Steam Machine presents itself as the sedentary equivalent of a Steam Deck already docked, but significantly more powerful. The configurations mentioned revolve around 16 GB of RAM, an SSD from 512 GB to 2 TB and a GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, with a stated objective: aim for 4K at 60 frames per second on TV thanks to FSR upscaling, even if it means lowering the framerate or the resolution on the most demanding games.

The benefit for the player is simple: a turnkey living room PC, Steam interface optimized for the controller, quick start-up and simplified update management. Griffais insists on the fact that the basic experience is already there, which suggests that the last months before the release are mainly used to refine SteamOS on this new format and to stabilize the production lines.

Steam Machine: when will we be able to buy it, and for what price in France?

Officially, Valve remains on a release date in the first half of 2026, without a specific date. The launch of the new Steam Controller on May 4, 2026 at $99 (around €99), however, gives a concrete benchmark: the controller arrives first, the living room machine should follow fairly quickly if production holds up. We can therefore aim for global marketing between the end of May and the end of June, unless further postponement.

On the price side, Valve has already warned that the Steam Machine would not be subsidized and would be positioned at the level of an entry or mid-range gaming PC. Estimates from specialist media run between €500 and €1,000, with some analysts not excluding a high-end model beyond $1,000 (around €930). In other words, if you plan to install this machine under your TV, now is the time to monitor the Steam ads and prepare your budget.
