Netflix starts filming the “Gundam” live-action film + cast

“Mobile Suit Gundam” has been one of the most influential mecha brands in the world for many decades – and with the live-action film from Netflix, another step towards global expansion is now imminent. We summarize.

Worldwide release

Netflix recently officially confirmed that filming has begun on the first live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam. Filming is currently taking place in Queensland, Australia – and the actors have been confirmed.

The main roles will include Sydney Sweeney (“The Housemaid”) and Noah Centineo (“The Recruit”), while Jim Mickle (showrunner and director of the Netflix series “Sweet Tooth”) will direct. The project is being realized in collaboration with Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks, who are jointly aiming for a worldwide release.

In order to maintain the connection to the original series and stay true to the central themes, long-time people responsible for the franchise, including producers Makoto Asanuma and Naohiro Ogata, are involved as executive producers.

The Netflix adaptation will once again focus on a war between Earth and the space colonies, in which rival pilots on different sides compete against each other.

In parallel with the film production, Bandai Namco Filmworks has founded a new US subsidiary to further expand the global presence of the “Gundam” brand and open up new markets. The live-action film plays a fundamental role here and is intended to make the franchise accessible to an even wider audience.
