Microsoft has just removed the last doubt: Xbox Project Helix will indeed be a real next generation Xbox console, and not a simple PC mode. Enough to relaunch the console war with full force at a time when the future PlayStation 6 is being prepared behind the scenes.

On March 5, Asha Sharma made the codename official Project Helix as the next Xbox capable of running console and PC games. A few days later, at GDC 2026, Jason Ronald detailed on Xbox Wire FR a new generation console based on a SoC AMD custom, co-designed for the next DirectX and a new FSR Diamond focused on ray tracing and path tracing.
Faced with rumors of an Xbox without a console, Jason Ronald set the record straight on April 21 on X: “Project Helix will be available as a 1st party Xbox console”. In other words, Microsoft designs and will sell this hardware itself. For Sonythis is bad news: the PS6 will not benefit from Xbox’s withdrawal from the physical machine market.
Xbox Project Helix wants to become your hybrid console/PC under the TV
Helix is designed like an Xbox which also behaves like a gaming PC. The official documents mention a unified platform where the same build runs on PC, Xbox Series and Helix via Xbox Play Anywherewhich already has more than 1,500 games. Several specialized media add that Microsoft is aiming for compatibility with PC stores like Steam, Epic Games Store Or GOGvia a simplified console interface.
Concretely, this would mean a living room box capable of launching your Xbox games, your PC titles, your Game Pass and even some old PlayStation exclusives ported to PC, as we already see on Steam. Microsoft also promises extended backward compatibility over four generations, in the continuity of the program relaunched for the 25 years ofXbox : a strong argument against a possible PS6 less open to the past catalog.
Release date, price, Xbox Project Helix vs PS6 duel: should we wait?
Officially, Microsoft plans to send the first Helix kits to the studios in 2027. From there, several analysts and specialized sites are betting instead on a public release in 2028, possibly in the same window as the PS6. The two machines would target the very high end with a big focus on ray tracing and FSR Diamond type upscaling on the Xbox side, compared to the in-house PSSR expected from Sony.
On the portfolio side, analysts mention launch prices around 50% higher than the current generation, i.e. around 900 to 1,000 dollars, around 900 to 1,050 euros for a console like Xbox Project Helix. For a French player without a current machine, a PS5 or a Xbox Series therefore remain rational options in the short term. But if you are aiming for a single machine for your Xbox, PC games and even some of the PlayStation titles released on Steam, Helix is already shaping up to be the most dangerous candidate against the PS6.
