The Elder Scrolls 6 is finally becoming clearer, but bad news awaits millions of players

After years where The Elder Scrolls VI was just a logo at E3 2018, the next RPG from Bethesda Game Studios finally takes shape. The studio has switched the project to real production since 2024, with the majority of its teams mobilized, and Todd Howard is now talking about a “classic Bethesda RPG” running on the new Creation Engine 3in the spirit of Skyrim.

Behind the scenes, a big internal milestone was reached in early 2026, confirming that The Elder Scrolls VI has become Bethesda’s top priority. But as development progresses, internal company documents Microsoft and the new strategy of Xbox paint a much less pleasant scenario for millions of players PlayStation.

The Elder Scrolls 6: where is development really in 2026?

The papers revealed during the trial between the FTC and Microsoft list The Elder Scrolls VI with a “2026 or later” window. Knowing Bethesda’s way of working, which likes to unveil its flagship games 6 to 12 months before release as for Fallout 4 Or Starfieldmany analysts are betting more on 2027, or even beyond.

On the content side, Todd Howard insists that it is a “classic Bethesda RPG”, understand a massive open world, full of quests and freedom, in the right line of Oblivion And Skyrim. The transition to Creation Engine 3 must above all serve the size of the world and physics, more than simple ray tracing effects. In short, the game is moving forward, even if there are still several years of work remaining.

The Elder Scrolls 6 exclusive to Xbox and PC: what consequences for PlayStation players?

It is on the targeted platforms that the cold shower arrives. The famous internal chart revealed during the FTC trial mentions The Elder Scrolls VI only on PC And Xbox Serieswith the PlayStation 5 totally absent. Sites like JVFrance or Jeuxvideo.com have concluded that the game “will not arrive on PS5”, speaking of bad news and of “changing consoles” for Tamriel fans.

The new boss of Xbox, Asha Sharmaalso seems ready to take this hard line. In a podcast relayed by ScreenRant, journalist Jez Corden talks about “very, very, very big discussions about exclusivity issues going on at the moment”. On the networks, when a fan demands that Xbox games remain only on Xbox, Sharma simply responds “Hear you”. She also estimated in a memo that Game Pass has “become too expensive for players” and must regain value: lock a juggernaut like The Elder Scrolls VI on the Xbox and PC ecosystem, day one in the subscription, ticks all the boxes.

The Elder Scrolls 6: when will we really be able to play it, and on which machines?

At this stage, the only scenario supported by concrete documents therefore remains a launch exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PCnot before 2026 and probably later. Later port rumors about a possible PlayStation 6 exist, but they are mainly based on Reddit leaks and the precedent of Starfieldregularly announced in rumor on PS5 without official confirmation.

For PlayStation players in France, the conclusion is brutal but clear: if you want to explore Tamriel as soon as The Elder Scrolls VI is released, you will almost certainly have to use an Xbox, a gaming PC or the Xbox cloud. By 2027, everything indicates that the next Elder Scrolls will be above all the showcase of Asha Sharma’s “Return to Xbox” strategy, even if it means leaving out millions of fans on PS5.
