Netflix deletes controversial “One Piece” scene from live-action series

The second season of the live-action adaptation of “One Piece” is missing a scene from the original – a decision that is causing debate among fans.

Changes in real series

With the release of the second season, the Straw Hat Pirates finally begin their journey on the Grandline, where their first stop takes them to the island of Whiskey Peak. However, the hospitable town quickly turns out to be a pirate’s grave, as the Baroque company lures unsuspecting adventurers into a trap there.

In this case, Zorro thwarts their plan; after all, as an ex-pirate hunter, he is familiar with their machinations and is hunting the gang. So far, so good – but in the manga there is a strange misunderstanding.

Luffy doesn’t notice anything of this at first, as he falls asleep after the welcome party, full of food, and only hours later realizes to his horror that his seemingly friendly hosts have been massacred. When a seriously injured agent from the Baroque company reveals to him that Zorro is responsible for the massacre, he sees red and attacks his crew member.

Controversial scene

The subsequent confrontation between Luffy and Zorro, in which they defeat Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine with just one attack without paying much attention, has always been controversial among “One Piece” fans. For many fans, Luffy’s behavior here seems completely exaggerated and incomprehensible, just to force a fight between him and Zorro that shouldn’t really be taken seriously.

Only after Luffy has let off some steam is he receptive enough to listen to Zoro’s explanation – and finally understands what’s really going on.

Ultimately, it was not confirmed whether the scene was cut for the reasons stated or simply due to lack of time, but the change did generate positive reactions from many fans. But what do you think of it? Would you have liked to have seen this scene in the live-action adaptation? Let us know!
