Starfield comes to PS5 with new improvements that Xbox players don’t have

After a long exclusivity on Xbox Series X|S and PC since 2023, Starfield finally lands on PlayStation 5 And PS5 Pro on April 7, 2026. The port is not just a simple copy and paste: it arrives with the big free Free Lanes update and the scripted DLC Terran Armadaavailable from day 1 on the Sony console.

Above all, this PS5 version integrates technical and gaming comfort improvements that Xbox players simply do not have, between advanced support for DualSense and dedicated graphics modes on PS5 Pro via the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Enough to transform this late port into a reference version for those who have not yet taken off.

Starfield on PS5: what does this version bring to the Xbox release of 2023?

On Xbox, Starfield arrived in 2023 in good but perfect condition. The version PlayStation 5 arrives, after months of fixes and balancing, with Free Lanes already integrated and Terran Armada ready to be launched from the start of the adventure. PS5 players therefore discover a game already enriched in content and more stable than that experienced by the first players on Xbox at launch.

Bethesda Game Studios also highlights specific work on the PS5 SSD to reduce certain loading times, particularly during fast travel. Add to that the PlayStation Trophies, Activity Cards, and social features from the Sony ecosystem, and this release is clearly aimed at those who want to get started Starfield in its best conditions on console.

PSSR and PS5 Pro: Starfield finally credible in 4K and 60 fps on console?

The real material novelty comes from the PS5 Pro. On this model, Starfield offers two dedicated profiles: one mode Pro Visual which aims for a rendering close to 4K at 30 fps, with more details and effects, and a mode Pro Performance which targets 60 fps. In both cases, the game relies on PSSR, an in-house upscaling technique which renders the image in lower definition then reconstructs it for 4K display, with less blur and flicker than a simple classic upscale.

On standard PS5, there are two more traditional modes, Quality and Performance, the latter also targeting 60 frames per second as on Xbox Series X. But the PS5 Pro plus PSSR combination clearly gives Sony’s console the advantage in terms of sharpness and perceived fluidity. However, it must be kept in mind that Starfield remains very dependent on the processor: in large cities, occasional drops in framerate can still occur, even in Pro Performance mode.

DualSense, touchpad and audio: what Starfield PS5 exclusives versus Xbox?

It is on the side of the DualSense that the PS5 version stands out the most from the Xbox controllers. Adaptive triggers change their resistance depending on the type of weapon or cannons on your ship, giving a different feeling to each shot. The controller’s light bar changes color based on your health level and hull condition, turning red when in critical danger. The voices of your allies, audio logs and ship communications come directly from the controller’s speaker, reinforcing the feeling of being in the cockpit.

The touchpad is also fully exploited: pressing the left part switches the view between first and third person, the right part immediately opens the map, while swipes allow you to navigate the menus, inventory or scanner without using key combinations. Faced with this, the Xbox version offers the same content base, Free Lanes and Terran Armada understood, but without these sensory and ergonomic additions. For a new player, especially on PS5 Pro, the PlayStation version therefore appears today to be the most pleasant way to discover Starfield.
