Steam Machine price seems to be very bad news for gamers

Presented in November 2025, the Steam Machine was to simplify access to PC gaming directly from the living room. Designed as an alternative to complex configurations, this console from Valve promised an accessible experience without compromising on performance. But as its release scheduled for the first half of 2026 approaches, one element disrupts expectations: its price. Still unknown, it is already the subject of numerous concerns, fueled by Valve’s latest statements.

Steam Machine, an uncertain price due to shortages

In a recent communication, Valve recognized difficulties linked to the evolution of the components market. The manufacturer explains: “When we announced these products in November, we expected to be able to communicate precise prices and launch dates by then. However, the memory and storage shortages that you have probably heard about in the industry have rapidly worsened since then. The limited availability and increasing price of these essential components are forcing us to review our delivery schedule and our prices (especially for the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame).” This situation directly impacts the calendar and pricing strategy of the product. Valve also specifies that “the situation can evolve quickly”, suggesting that nothing is yet definitively fixed.

A console close to the price of a gaming PC?

If no official price has been announced, certain clues allow us to outline a trend. According to Valve officials, the Steam Machine should match the price of a PC offering equivalent performance. They explain: “more in line with current PC market pricing… We believe that if you put a PC together with components and you get the same level of performance, that’s the price range we’re aiming for.” In other words, it would not be a low-cost console, but a product positioned in a higher segment. An element that could slow down certain players looking for an economical alternative.

Two models and several configurations expected

The Steam Machine should be offered in several versions, including 512 GB and 2 TB models. Players will also have the choice between different configurations, including or not accessories such as the Steam Controller. This modularity makes it possible to adapt the final price according to needs, but it also adds additional uncertainty to the real cost of the product upon release.

Players already worried about a possible increase

On the community side, discussions around the price are increasing. Many anticipate an increase linked to the increase in the cost of components such as memory and SSDs. Some believe the product could exceed initial expectations, while others question Valve’s positioning against the competition. A few months before its launch, the Steam Machine therefore remains surrounded by uncertainties. Between technical ambitions and economic constraints, its price could well become one of the determining elements for its success.
