Backwards compatibility, preservation, Xbox Mode for Windows, Microsoft “prepares the next generation”

Backwards compatibility and reduction of console/PC barriers

The Xbox Developer Summit at GDC 2026 was an opportunity to talk about several topics concerning the Microsoft brand. Besides its Project Helix console, other themes came to the table. Backward compatibility, for example, remains Xbox’s priority, confirming its desire to keep the last four generations of games playable as easily and for a long time.

In addition, the team dedicated to game preservation, whose mission was already mentioned when it was formed two years ago, continues its work by preparing for the deployment of “new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past”. Apparently games like Fuzion Frenzy And Panzer Dragoon Orta would be affected, among many others.

But the hottest and most highlighted subject in recent years by Xbox is the desire to blur the border between PC and console as much as possibleparticularly by offering developers “a more unified path to reach the widest possible audience while helping to reduce development costs”.

One of the symbols of this desire to streamline the console/PC switch is found in the upcoming arrival of an Xbox Mode for Windows 11. Thanks to this mode, we will have a full-screen Xbox interface for desktop computers, laptops or even the famous Xbox ROG Ally, certain functionalities of which will be transposed to a computer. THE “This is an Xbox” Xbox Play Anywhere will therefore take an additional major step.

Let’s end with the fact that Xbox welcomes the return of iconic franchises such as Halo And Gears of War while being careful, at least for the first time, to talk about the opening on the PlayStation side. Afterwards, we can’t take away from them that it comes out of their stove.
