Online video game scams have increased in recent years, and the popularity of consoles makes gamers particularly vulnerable to well-organized traps. For several days, a fake site pretending to be the Micromania store has been circulating on the web and attracting attention with offers that are impossible to ignore.
Internet users discover consoles sold at ridiculously low prices, which can easily give the impression of an exceptional promotion. But behind these spectacular prices lies a carefully prepared fraud.
Consoles at knockdown prices to attract victims
The principle of this scam is based on a simple but extremely effective strategy: offering a price so low that it becomes difficult to resist. The fraudulent site notably highlights a Nintendo Switch 2 offered at 44.99 eurosaccompanied by a fictional game called Mario Kart World. A PlayStation 5 is also displayed at only 54.99 eurosa totally unrealistic price for a console that is still in high demand.
The objective is obviously to encourage Internet users to quickly click on the offer without taking the time to check the reliability of the site. Once on the page, victims are faced with a near-perfect copy of the Micromania site, designed to inspire trust. But behind this facade hides a system intended to recover users’ personal and banking information.
Micromania confirms identity theft
Faced with the rapid spread of this scam, several Internet users questioned Micromania directly on social networks. The brand quickly reacted to confirm that it was indeed fraud. In a response to a concerned user, the distributor’s support said: “Hello, I think you are on a site that is trying to scam you. Can you send me the URL? »
This quick reaction helped confirm that the fake site had no connection with the company. Micromania also recalls that its only official online store is accessible via the address micromania.fr. Any variation of this address, or any unusual extension, must immediately alert Internet users.
Console-related scams are increasing
This type of scam has become increasingly common in the world of video games. Popular consoles like the PlayStation 5 or the upcoming Switch 2 are ideal targets for fraudsters, because their high demand pushes some players to rush as soon as an offer seems advantageous.
Hackers therefore exploit this impatience by creating clone sites capable of deceiving even the most cautious Internet users. In some cases, these fake sites even appear in search engine results, boosting their credibility. To avoid falling into the trap, a few simple rules can be applied:
- check the exact address of the site in the browser bar
- be wary of abnormally low prices
- avoid clicking on links shared on social networks
- favor official stores
Caution remains the best protection
Cybersecurity specialists point out that online scams are constantly evolving. Fraudsters are constantly improving their techniques to make their sites ever more credible. In the case of this scam, the use of Micromania’s image shows the extent to which hackers seek to exploit consumers’ trust in well-known brands.
If you believe you have made a purchase from a fraudulent site, it is recommended that you act quickly. The first step is to contact your bank immediately to block any suspicious transactions. In all cases, the best protection remains vigilance: when an offer seems too good to be true, it generally is.
