GTA 6: the duration of story mode is becoming clearer and is already causing an intense debate

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release in November 2026, and anticipation around Rockstar Games’ game continues to grow. After thirteen years since GTA V, expectations are immense, especially regarding the single player mode.

If multiplayer will arrive later, the first days will be devoted exclusively to the main story. And one question keeps coming up in the community: how many hours will it take to complete GTA 6?

Players are asking for between 50 and over 100 hours of story

On Reddit, a fan recently started a debate asking what the ideal length of story mode would be. The responses show very varied expectations. One particularly popular comment estimates that 50 hours would be ideal for the main story, 80 hours with side quests, and between 100 and 150 hours for 100% completion.

Other players are hoping for a longer campaign than GTA V. One explained: “It seemed to me that the story mode in GTA V was so short that it really disappointed me. So I’m hoping that GTA VI will at least have a slightly longer story.”

Some go even further in their expectations: “As long as possible. I didn’t wait 13 years or however long to finish the game in 4 days like I did with GTA V. Or about 8 days for RDR2. 100+ hours just for the main story (not including side quests) would be incredible. But I’m not under any illusions.” These reactions illustrate the difficulty for Rockstar to satisfy such a large community.

Rockstar will have to balance ambition and accessibility

Creating a single-player campaign capable of meeting all of these expectations represents a major challenge. Too short a story might frustrate those who have waited more than a decade. Conversely, an extremely long campaign could put off some players who prefer a more sustained pace. The example of Red Dead Redemption 2 often comes up in discussions. Getting 100% in this title can take almost 200 hours. Many imagine that GTA 6 could offer a similar volume of content.

An open world that promises hundreds of hours

Although the exact length of the main campaign remains unknown, it is likely that GTA 6 will feature a wide variety of side activities. Rockstar is renowned for the richness of its open worlds. Side missions, random events, mini-games and various activities should keep players busy well beyond the main storyline. The trailers have already hinted at a dense universe, with Lucia and her partner at the heart of a modern criminal intrigue.

An expectation that fuels debate and speculation

As the release date approaches, discussions around GTA 6 are intensifying. A third trailer is expected in the months leading up to launch, and pre-orders should open before the end of the year. Until then, the question of how long the story mode should last will continue to divide players, with each having their own vision of what the ideal experience should be.
