New anime film for “Sword Art Online” announced + trailer


The Japanese company Bandai Namco Entertainment today announced an anime film based on the “Sword Art Online” franchise, which will be produced as a bonus for a new video game that will be presented at the same time. We summarize.

The new game, which is entitled “Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad” and, like the predecessors in the series, is described as a classic single-player action RPG with the idea of ​​the “Death Game” VRMMO, is expected to be released on July 10, 2026 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S – also in Europe.

As a bonus, the digital “Ultimate Edition” includes a 110-minute anime film called “Unanswered//butterfly: Sword Art Online,” which is directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira (“Drifting Dragons”) in the CGI studio Polygon Pictures.

The plot of the film returns to the deadly world of “Sword Art Online” and revolves around the two players Emirun and Rex, who know each other from the real world and happened to meet again in the game. However, after their entire group is wiped out by a Player-Killer, they train under the swordsman Asuna to avenge their fallen comrades.
