Anime market abroad is growing rapidly and leaving Japan behind

According to the Anime Industry Report 2025, the foreign anime market has once again recorded stronger growth compared to the Japanese one. We summarize.

Overseas market is booming

Recently, the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) released the summarized version of its Anime Industry Report 2025, based on AJA’s 2024 surveys and data analysis.

The results show that the entire anime market grew by 114.8% compared to the previous year and has now reached a new record level of 3.84 trillion yen (equivalent to around 21 billion euros).

International business once again proved to be the strongest growth driver: compared to the previous year, it increased by 126% and reached a share of 56.5% of the overall market. This means it significantly outperformed the domestic market – by 499.7 billion yen (around 2.74 billion euros).

In 2023, the difference between the two markets was only 97.9 billion yen, which once again underlines the significant increase in the foreign market – and industry experts are convinced that this gap will soon become much larger.
