Cyberpunk 2077: abandoned lunar expansion divides fans, but nothing is lost

Since its chaotic release in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 underwent a spectacular transformation. Thanks to a series of ambitious updates and DLC Phantom Libertythe game is now hailed as a major RPG of the decade. But just as everything seemed to be stabilized, a new rumor reignited the debates: a second expansion was to take players… to the Moon.

Recently discovered data files and artistic concepts hint at this project. According to fans and insiders, this abandoned content was imagined even before the game’s release, but sacrificed in favor of priority fixes. “We know they were planning more DLC, but the project was scrapped because they needed to fix the base game first,” one user wrote on Reddit.

Why did CD Projekt RED cancel this project?

CD Projekt RED had all the cards in hand to offer an ambitious lunar adventure. The Cyberpunk universe already evokes a colonized Moon, exploited by large corporations. A DLC on this theme would have offered a unique playground, radically different from Night City.

But the game’s mixed reception at its launch disrupted plans. The Polish publisher preferred to concentrate its resources on the technical stabilization of the game, postponing — then canceling — other expansions.

An abandoned extension, but not forgotten

Despite its cancellation, the idea continues to inspire dreams. Many hope that the next Cyberpunk 2already in development, will include elements of this never-released content. “I hope they use some of these ideas for the future,” says one user. Another added: “Lunar exploration could have been a turning point for the series. »

Can we still hope for lunar DLC for Cyberpunk 2077?

Nothing is officially planned. CD Projekt RED seems to have closed the chapter Cyberpunk 2077even if there is still hope. After all, The Witcher 3 was indeed entitled to an extension 10 years after its release. A return of lunar content is therefore not completely impossible.

In the meantime, fans can still dream in front of the artworks released and imagine what this expansion could have been: an adventure far from Night City, in a sterile and icy setting, but rich in narrative and technological issues.
