Artificial intelligence continues to establish itself in the video game industry, raising as much hope as debate. Faced with the emergence of tools capable of generating content in a few seconds, some are already imagining a complete revolution in video game creation.
However, on the side of major publishers, the discourse remains more measured. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, recently took a stand explaining that AI, despite its capabilities, is not enough to produce true success.
AI and video games, a useful tool but far from decisive
In his analysis, Strauss Zelnick recognizes that artificial intelligence can play a concrete role in development. In particular, it makes it possible to create visual or technical resources more quickly, which can speed up certain production stages. But according to him, this capacity does not fundamentally change the nature of the creative process. He insists on an essential point: “creating such a phenomenon is a completely different matter and requires real commitment and great human creativity.”
GTA 6 and big games, still dependent on human expertise
Asked about the possibility that AI would facilitate the creation of major games like GTA 6, the manager was categorical. Asked whether these technologies could simplify development, he answers bluntly: “Not in the least.” For him, successful games remain mainly the fruit of large studios with significant resources and experienced teams. Even successful independent projects rely on strong mastery and specific know-how. This reality does not seem to be called into question by the arrival of artificial intelligence tools.
A critical vision of AI in the face of the expectations of the general public
Strauss Zelnick goes further by criticizing certain preconceived ideas around AI. In particular, he rejects the idea that an individual can create global success simply by using these tools. According to him, this vision excessively simplifies the reality of the sector. He states thus:
“The idea that new tools would allow one person to press a button to generate a hit and deliver it to millions of consumers around the world is a laughable idea.”
AI in video games, between opportunities and limits
If AI arouses so much interest, it is also because it is already transforming certain aspects of creation. Tools now make it possible to quickly generate content, automate certain tasks or assist developers. But these advances do not replace the entire creative process.
Strauss Zelnick illustrates this limit by discussing automatically generated content, such as certain music produced from simple instructions. These creations, according to him, fulfill a one-off role, but do not make a lasting impression. In this context, artificial intelligence appears more as a complementary tool than as a solution capable of replacing humans in the creation of successful games.
