An iconic studio that changes roles
Founded in 1996 by writer Tom Clancy, Red Storm Entertainment made video game history with the first adaptations of his works, notably Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six And Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon. Bought by Ubisoft in 2000, the studio then participated in numerous episodes of these franchises. It should be noted, however, that the latest titles in these licenses were developed by other studios of the French publisher, notably Ubisoft Montreal (Rainbow Six Siege) and Ubisoft Paris (Ghost Recon Wildlands).
From now on, Red Storm will no longer develop games. The studio will, however, continue to exist in another form, focusing on technological support functions, particularly around the Snowdrop engine. If Red Storm is historically associated with Tom Clancy licenses, its role has evolved in recent years. The studio had notably turned to virtual reality with projects like Star Trek: Bridge Crew Or Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR.
His last major project, The Division Heartlandhad been canceled in 2024 after several testing phases. This was already a bad sign, but it is above all the consequences of Ubisoft’s recent restructuring which seem to be continuing. As a reminder, the objective is to reduce costs by several hundred million euros and to reorganize production around new structures called “Creative Houses”.
