More than ten years after its release, The Witcher 3 continues to surprise. While CD Projekt Red’s game remains a deeply single-player adventure centered on Geralt of Rivia, a multiplayer mod called Witcher Online has just reached an important milestone thanks to a major update deployed on February 24, 2026.
Patches 1.1 and 1.11 have just been released to significantly improve the performance, stability and fluidity of the mod. A development awaited by players who wish to explore the Continent together, while waiting for the next opus in the saga.
The Witcher 3 Online, a multiplayer mod that challenges the logic of the original game
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was originally designed as a strictly single-player experience. Its entire narrative is based on Geralt of Rivia, his choices, his encounters and the consequences of his decisions. Nothing in its initial architecture provided for a multiplayer mode.
This is precisely what makes Witcher Online awesome. The mod turns the RPG into a sort of pseudo-MMO where multiple players can share the same world. A technical feat when we know that no official tool was initially designed for this.
The mod even has its own official server. Players therefore do not need to configure a private infrastructure to join their friends, which greatly simplifies access.
Patch 1.1, a major overhaul of performance and fluidity
Update 1.1 constitutes the heart of this evolution. In particular, it introduces a system for masking entities. Concretely, players located more than 100 meters away are no longer displayed on the screen. This simple change reduces the load on the REDengine 3 engine and significantly improves overall fluidity, especially in densely populated areas.
- Fluidity when adding player entities
- Loading new custom character appearances
- Displaying statuses indicating that a player is watching a cutscene
At the same time, a problematic feature was removed: direct teleportation between players, considered too unstable and the source of numerous bugs.
Patch 1.11, stability and targeted fixes
More discreet, patch 1.11 consolidates everything. It brings general stability improvements as well as several fixes targeting recurring bugs. Even if this version is less spectacular than 1.1, it strengthens the reliability of the mod over time. For a community project, maintaining an acceptable level of stability on such a complex game remains an ongoing challenge.
A free mod available on Nexus Mods
Like the majority of community projects, Witcher Online is completely free. It is available for download via Nexus Mods, in the section dedicated to The Witcher 3.
Originally released on May 19, 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt still has an average of 93/100 on OpenCritic, with 95% critical recommendations. Developed and published by CD Projekt Red, the game continues to be supported by an active community.
By gradually transforming the single-player experience into a shared adventure, Witcher Online demonstrates that a title more than a decade old can still evolve. This new update gives players something to wait before the next official entry into the Witcher universe.
