While the PlayStation 5 remains a very popular machine, Sony is slowly starting to lift the veil on its future console. Mark Cerny, historic architect of the brand, has just said a very meaningful sentence about the PlayStation 6. And according to him, we shouldn’t expect to see it arrive before… a few years.
In a video posted on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, Mark Cerny spoke with Jack Huynh, senior vice president at AMD, about future technological advancements in graphics. And it was at the very end of the video that Cerny let slip this statement: he said he was “impatient to integrate these new technologies into a future console in a few years”.
A release in 2028 more likely than 2027
This formulation immediately reignited speculation. Until then, many imagined a release of the PS6 in 2027, in continuity with Sony’s usual cycles. But the expression “in a few years” suggests that the PlayStation 6 would not be planned before the end of 2028. If it were 2026 or even early 2027, Cerny would likely have spoken of a shorter deadline.
It should be remembered that the PS5 was released in 2020, followed by a PS5 Pro version in 2024. This mid-generation model could allow Sony to extend the traditional seven-year cycle by one or two years. Especially since the PS5 continues to sell well, with more than 80.3 million units sold to date.
PS6 Specs: Rumors and Caution
As is often the case, technical rumors are rife. Leaks suggest a PlayStation 6 equipped with 40 to 48 RDNA 5 computing units, with a frequency of 3 GHz or higher. The processor could feature eight Zen 6 or later cores, a significant jump from the current PS5. But Sony hasn’t confirmed anything at this point.
The only certainties: the PS6 is not for tomorrow, and the site still seems to be in the advanced design phase. Mark Cerny himself insists that it is “still early” to determine the technologies that will be integrated.
For fans, this likely means a wait until 2028, with an official announcement sometime in 2027 in the best case scenario. But as always with Sony, it’s better to be patient.
