The end of an era. This is the feeling shared by millions of gamers around the world after Sony’s official announcement: the PlayStation 4, launched in November 2013, is entering its final chapter. More than ten years after its release, the cult console is preparing to lose some of its most used features, a clear sign that Sony is definitely turning the page.
From 2026, the PS4 will see its support reduced considerably. “This includes Web Activity Feed, Small Headlines Storage, User Headlines Storage, Users and Profiles, Word Filters, and Shared Media Web API.” A gradual elimination which concerns both social tools and content management services, suggesting a total deactivation shortly.
Why is Sony gradually abandoning the PS4?
With over 115 million units sold, the PS4 remains one of the most popular consoles ever produced. However, despite this exceptional longevity, the Japanese firm believes that the time has come to turn the page. The rise of the PlayStation 5, whose sales are on the verge of catching up with those of its predecessor, has a lot to do with it.
This gradual withdrawal of support is not abrupt. Players can still enjoy PlayStation Network (PSN), online services and titles they own. As Sony clarifies: “That said, all is not lost, as PS4 users will still be able to access PSN and online features for the foreseeable future.” But it is now clear that development efforts are focused on the future.
A console marked by cult games
The Last of Us Part II, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne… The PS4 has hosted some of the most popular exclusives in video game history. For many, it symbolizes a golden era, a machine that knew how to combine technical power, catalog diversity and accessibility.
This video game richness also explains why so many players still use the console, even after the arrival of the PS5. For them, this announcement sounds like the end of a cycle with a strong emotional impact. A transition that Sony is trying to cushion by ensuring a smooth disappearance.
Towards the PS6 and the future of PlayStation
In the shadow of this announcement, another question is already agitating the forums: that of the PlayStation 6. Rumors are growing about a release in the coming years, reinforcing the idea that the PS4 will become totally obsolete by then. The message is clear: if you still care about your console, take full advantage of it while you still can.
