“Stupid betrayal”: Ex-editor shoots against “Dragon Ball DAIMA”

At the recent Comicon Napoli 2026, Kazuhiko Torishima, the former editor-in-chief of “Weekly Shonen Jump” and long-time editor of Akira Toriyama, once again expressed very negative comments about “Dragon Ball DAIMA”.

Harsh criticism again

This time around, Torishima didn’t hold back in any way and referred to “Dragon Ball DAIMA” as “dumb”, “slow” and even as “Betrayal of ‘Dragon Ball'”although he particularly disliked the first episode. Because in his opinion this would have had no significance for the actual plot.

It is not the first time that the former editor has expressed criticism about the current direction of the popular franchise. In the past, he described “Dragon Ball DAIMA” as a “junk anime” in his podcast and also publicly criticized “Dragon Ball Super” and artist Toyotarou several times.

His statements always cause controversial discussions among fans, especially since Akira Toriyama was still actively involved in “Dragon Ball DAIMA” before his death and was responsible for many designs and parts of the world design.

Regardless of the criticism, Toei Animation is already working on further projects related to the franchise. Among other things, new anime content for “Dragon Ball Super” and the video game “Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3” are in development.
