Sony is pushing PS4 players to migrate to the PS5, before the arrival of the PS6

In recent days, several PlayStation 4 users have reported having received a message directly signed by Sony. The tone is polite, almost complicit, but the subtext is clear: it’s time to put the PS4 in the closet. The Japanese firm is clearly encouraging its players to take the plunge towards the PS5, before finding themselves lagging behind in the face of new features planned for 2026.

This message, which appeared on social networks via screenshots, is accompanied by a QR code directing to the latest offers on the next-gen console. For the millions of players still attached to the PS4, the announcement resonates as a reminder: certain games and services will not be available for much longer.

A message that leaves no room for doubt

Sony chose a direct method to get its message across. A user claims to have received the following notification on their console:
“Whether you’re catching up on hit titles of 2025 like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, ARC Raiders, and Ghost of Yotei, or preparing for the most anticipated games of 2026, including SAROS, 007 First Light, Nioh 3, and more, now is the perfect time to upgrade to a PS5 console.”

The wording is not aggressive, but it leaves little room for interpretation. With major games reserved for the PS5 and the gradual end of PS4 support, the message is clear: those who don’t migrate risk missing the point.

The PS4: a legendary console… at the end of its life

Released in 2013, the PlayStation 4 marked an entire generation of gamers. However, more than five years after the launch of the PS5, it continues to equip around 50% of users worldwide according to data from mid-2024.

But the trend is accelerating: from October 2025, Sony announced that certain PSN functions would no longer be available on PS4 from 2026. This is the start of a gradual disengagement, as the company focuses on its current console… and begins to discreetly discuss the next one.

A transition to the PS5… before the PS6?

This move comes as rumors around a future PlayStation 6 begin to swell. For Sony, this is probably a final push to switch PS4 players to the PS5 before it itself becomes “old generation”.

The company seems to want to ensure that its next major titles find their audience without technical hindrance. And for good reason: the games mentioned in the message are among the most anticipated of the coming year. Between Nioh 3, SAROS and 007 First Light, Sony is putting all the chances on its side to convert the last reluctant people.

What are the risks of staying on PS4 in 2026?

Beyond access to new games, staying on PS4 could mean giving up some key PlayStation Network features. Even if Sony has not yet published a precise timetable for these cuts, the alert is being sounded.

In addition, studios are also starting to abandon multi-gen development to focus on the power of the PS5. As the exclusives come one after the other, PS4 players risk becoming more and more isolated. In terms of compatibility, performance or online services, the 2013 console is probably experiencing its last months of full activity.
