Second season of “One Piece” suffers significant setback on Netflix

Despite the extremely positive response from audiences, the second season of the live-action adaptation of “One Piece” has seen a significant decline in viewership compared to the first season. We summarize below.

Behind expectations

With excellent reviews, the second season of “One Piece” confirms Netflix’s extremely ambitious ambitions to give the successful franchise over twelve seasons – but the latest figures could certainly cause concerns.

After the difference in total viewership according to “What’s on Netflix” was still manageable in the first four days after streaming started with 18.5 million views (first season) to 16.8 million views (second season), this gap has now widened to a worrying level.

After 13 days, the first season had 42.1 million views, whereas the recently released second season only has 27.9 million views in the same period, currently over 33% behind its predecessor.

With a budget of around $144 million ($18 million per episode), the first season was already one of the most expensive Netflix series of all time, but the second season is said to have topped this. Although there are no official figures, the industry estimate is that the budget is between $180 and $200 million.

The associated great expectations are therefore in clear contrast to the current performance of the second season, which will undoubtedly have an impact on the further development of the series.

After all, the third season has already been confirmed for 2027. Nevertheless, Netflix will probably keep a very close eye on the numbers.
