The PlayStation Store has launched its “Critics’ Choice” promotions and among them, a video game UFO is causing a sensation: High on Life. This first-person shooter, as absurd as it is offbeat, is on offer at -65%, going from €39.99 to only €13.99. A smashed price that won’t last: the promotion ends on February 26 at 2:59 a.m..
Developed by Squanch Games, the studio co-founded by Justin Roiland (co-creator of Rick and Morty), High on Life is aimed at an audience looking for fun and second degree. Halfway between a parody of Doom and a science fiction cartoon, the game has managed to forge a unique identity… despite a mixed critical reception upon its release.
A crazy universe where weapons speak
The plot starts in a way that is as absurd as it is brilliant: a high school student with no future sees his daily life turned upside down when an alien cartel arrives on Earth to supply drugs… to humans. Armed with guns that talk, insult, motivate or panic depending on the situation, the player becomes an intergalactic bounty hunter. It’s completely crazy, and that’s precisely what makes the charm of High on Life.
Each biome visited reserves its share of visual surprises and absurd dialogues. The main enemy, Garmantuous, is as grotesque as it is menacing, and the game multiplies references to pop culture and deliberately embarrassing situations. A cocktail that will not please everyone, but which will appeal to lovers of dark humor and the absurd.
An expansion already released and a sequel on the way
If the base game hooks you, know that an expansion named High on Knife is also available. It extends the universe with a new scenario centered on one of the most talkative (and sharpest) knives in the game. Critical feedback is similar to the main game, oscillating between won over fans and perplexed players.
But above all, Squanch Games has confirmed that the continuation of High on Life is already under developmentalthough little information has filtered out on its content or release date.
Last days to take advantage of the PS Store offer
For those looking for an original FPS, which doesn’t take itself seriously, High on Life worth the detour. At less than €14, it is an ideal gateway into a barred universe, accessible on PS4 as well as on PS5. But the clock is ticking: 65% off expires February 26 at 2:59 a.m.. Beyond that, you will have to wait for a new promotion… or pay the full price.
